Correct Use Of ‘Supposed To’ – With Examples

If you are confused about the phrase “Supposed to” as it is used in various ways so, in this blog, I will teach you the correct use of supposed to with examples.

is/am/are/was/ were + supposed to + V1+ others

(1) जब आपसे कोई कुछ उम्मीद करे (jab aapse koi kuchh ummid kre)

• You’re supposed to short out this work by the next morning. (आपको इस काम को अगली सुबह तक खत्म कर लेनाहै।)
• You’re supposed to come to the party. (आपको पार्टी में आना है!)
• She is beautiful enough to make you fall for her. Therefore, She is supposed to have this much attitude.
  वह इतनी (पर्याप्त) सुन्दर तो है की आपको दीवाना बना दे इसलिए उसका इतना attitude तो होना ही चाहिए। ( attitude होने की उम्मीद की जाती है)
• Is it supposed to rain today? (क्या आज बारिश होने वाली है ?)
• What is the weather supposed to be like today? (आज मौसम कैसे होने वाला है ?)

(2) होने की उम्मीद होना। (Hone ki ummid hona) )

• (a) Priya was supposed to be here right now. (प्रिया को अभी यहीं होना था।)
• (b) He’s supposed to be at the park in next 5 minutes.(उसे अगले 5 मिनट में पार्क में पहुंचना है।)
• (c) You’re 20 years old. Therefore, you’re supposed to be mature to understand it. (आप 20 साल के हैं। इसलिए, आपको इसे समझने के लिए पर्याप्त परिपक्व होना चाहिए था।)
• (d) The legacy, your father has left is supposed to be inherited only by your elder brother.
  आपके पिता ने जो पैतृक सम्पत्ति छोड़ी है, वह केवल आपके बड़े भाई को ही विरासत में मिलनी चाहिए (ऐसा उम्मीद किया जाता है)

(3) कुछ कर रहे होने की उम्मीद करना। (Kuchh kar rahe hone ki ummid karna )

• (a) You’re supposed to be having a good day during this lockdown.(उम्मीद है कि आपका दिन इस own में अच्छा गुजर रहा होगा!)
• (b)You’re supposed to be using Instagram right now. (उम्मीद है कि आप इस वक़्त Instagram चला रहे होंगे।)
• what are you doing all this?
  You were supposed to be studying at this moment. (तुम ये सब क्या कर रहे हो?
  उम्मीद थी की तुम इस समय पढाई कर रहे होंगे। )

(4) कुछ पास होने की उम्मीद करना (kuchh Pas hone ki ummid karna)

• (a) You’re supposed to have at least a laptop to work
• with us. (हमारे साथ काम करने के लिए आपके पास कम से कम एक लैपटॉप होना चाहिए।)
• (b) you’re supposed to have at least a camera to explore this place. (इस जगह से परिचित होने के लिए आपके पास कम से कम एक होनी चाहिए।)

 

…is/am/are/was / were + supposed to have + V₃ + others

(5) कुछ कर चुके होने की उम्मीद करना। (kuchh kar chuke hone ki ummid karna.)

• (a) You’re supposed to have reached home well (उम्मीद है कि आप अच्छे से घर पहुंच गए होंगे।)
• (b) You’re supposed to have bought a mobile to study online. (उम्मीद है कि online पढ़ने के लिए आप mobile खरीद चुके होंगे।)

 

….is/am/are/was / were + supposed to have been + V₃ + (by a person)…

(6) कुछ किए जा चुके होने की उम्मीद करना । (kuchh kiye ja chuke hone ki ummid karna.)

• (a) This work is supposed to have been completed by the next year. (माना जा रहा है कि यह काम अगले साल तक पूरा कर लिया जाएगा) ( उम्मीद की जा रही है)
• (b)This road was supposed to have been constructed by last month (इस सड़क का निर्माण पिछले माह तक हो जाना चाहिए था) ! or,(माना जा रहा था कि यह road का निर्माण पिछले माह तक पूरा कर लिया जाएगा) (उम्मीद की जा रही थी)
• The question, that had left my mind spinning is supposed to have been answered by the maths teacher.
  (जिस प्रश्न ने मेरे दिमाग को घूमा दिया था , माना जा रहा है उसका उत्तर गणित के शिक्षक ने दे दिया होगा। कि (उम्मीद की जा रही है)
